In May 2016, we worked with a group of 8 young men at HMYOI Feltham.
Over two days, the focus was on thinking skills, accepting responsibility and goal setting. Although there appeared to be an initial apprehension around drama exercises, all that changed when the practitioners encouraged the group to get on their feet and explore their ideas and feelings towards a character that they had created.
By using the character to address challenges or situations that the group might face but ‘one step removed’, the participants were able to reflect on their own behaviour. One participant stated that the most important thing he got out of the two days was the need to continue encouraging his younger sibling not to go down the same route as him and to begin setting realistic goals for the future that would deter him from a life of crime.
